Why a case number alone is not enough
Federal case numbers are only unique within a district. 1:24-cv-01234 exists in dozens of courts at once, which is why a lookup that ignores the district returns the wrong lawsuit with total confidence.
CaseMagic treats the district as part of the identity of a case, and when you do not know which one it is, it searches and tells you where the number turned up. Judge initials are excluded from that identity on purpose: they change when a case is reassigned, and a system that treats the reassigned case as a new one splits one lawsuit into two records and starts losing history.

Which courts are covered?
United States federal district courts — all 94 districts, including the territorial district courts. State, county and municipal courts are not supported yet. Docket data comes from CourtListener and its RECAP archive.
What if my case is in state court?
CaseMagic cannot help yet, and will say so rather than returning a guess. Every unsupported search is recorded, and which state court gets built next is decided by that demand rather than by opinion.
Can I track a case I am not involved in?
Yes. Federal civil dockets are public records. Journalists, investors, competitors and researchers track cases they are not parties to all the time.
Does tracking a case tell the other side anything?
No. Nothing about who is watching a case reaches the court, the docket or anybody in the case.
