If you are not sure which district your case is in

Go by the courthouse. You know which building you go to, or which city the papers tell you to send things to, and the court picker above is searchable by city for exactly that reason — it is how people know where their case is, rather than by a four-letter code.

The traps are the ones where a city and a district do not line up the way they sound. Los Angeles and Santa Ana are both the Central District of California; San Diego is the Southern District, not the Central. Leaving the court blank searches every district, which is slower and always correct.

Questions people ask before they start

Do you cover state courts?

State, county and municipal courts are not supported yet. United States federal district courts — all 94 districts, including the territorial district courts. State, county and municipal case numbering has no common format, and rather than search and fail we say which courts are covered.

Why do only some districts have a page?

Because each page states that court’s own website, and the obvious way to work that address out from the court code is wrong for several districts — two of them are at a shortened domain. Those values are fetched from the court data source and committed, and a district gets a page once its values are verified rather than guessed.

Can I still check a case in a district with no page?

Yes. All 94 districts are searchable from the form on this page and from every other page on the site. The district pages add reference material about the court; they are not a gate on the lookup.
